Birds in The City brings Betsoft’s slightly unhinged feathered gang back to the telephone wires, this time high above a colourful city street. It is a sequel to the original Birds, but the old-fashioned setup has been replaced by a 6×5 grid, cascading wins and a much more modern scatter-pays structure. The birds themselves still look wonderfully ridiculous, with helmets, goggles and enough attitude to suggest they have been causing problems around this neighbourhood for years.
The biggest attraction is not actually hidden inside the bonus. Multiplier symbols worth up to 500x can appear during normal play, while special Super Scatters can award an instant prize of up to 45,000x the bet when Free Spins trigger. The bonus then changes the multipliers into a persistent system that can grow throughout the round. It is a fairly familiar formula underneath, but the multiplier progression and huge Super Scatter chase give these birds enough reason to return to the city.
Birds in The City uses 6 reels and 5 rows with a Scatter Pays system. Landing at least 8 matching symbols anywhere on the grid creates a win, after which those symbols disappear and new ones fall into the empty spaces. Cascades continue for as long as new wins keep forming, while Scatter and Super Scatter symbols stay in place during the sequence.
The RTP is 96.00%, volatility is very high and the maximum win reaches an unusually large 45,000x the bet. That top prize is worth putting into context, though: it comes specifically from triggering Free Spins with four Super Scatters rather than from an ordinary symbol combination. Multiplier symbols can carry values between 2x and 500x, while Mystery symbols occasionally give the base game another chance to restart a seemingly dead cascade.
Every win removes its paying symbols and allows new ones to fall into the gaps. The process continues until no further win appears, and the payouts from the whole sequence are then combined.
Multiplier symbols can land during these cascades with values from 2x to 500x. Once the sequence ends, every visible Multiplier is added together and the resulting value multiplies the total win from that round. They therefore need an actual win to become useful; a lonely 500x Multiplier on a dead spin is sadly just a very expensive-looking nest.
Base-game Mystery symbols can also appear during spins and cascades. They reveal regular paying symbols and can occasionally create a new win that keeps the cascade moving. Mystery symbols disappear completely once Free Spins begin.
Landing 4 or more Scatters awards 15 Free Spins. The familiar Multiplier symbols remain, but their behaviour changes considerably.
Whenever a Multiplier lands on a winning spin, its value contributes to a persistent Total Multiplier. That total remains for later spins and can keep increasing as additional Multiplier symbols arrive. Landing at least 3 Scatters during the bonus adds another 5 Free Spins, so an early multiplier followed by a retrigger can make the second half of the feature considerably more interesting.
Super Scatters can accompany the regular Scatters when Free Spins trigger and award an instant prize before the bonus even begins:
That final combination is also the game’s maximum win, so the biggest prize is actually hiding in the bonus trigger rather than at the end of some enormous multiplier chain.
There are two direct bonus purchases plus a boosted base-game option.
Bet Booster cannot be combined with the bonus purchases and pauses while Free Spins are active. The Super purchase is obviously much more aggressive, but that 10x minimum at least removes the weakest multipliers from the equation.
Birds in The City is one of those games that looks harmless until you notice how nasty the maths underneath can be. The cartoon birds and bright city backdrop are easygoing enough, but very high volatility, a four-Scatter bonus trigger and multipliers that are worthless without a matching win make this far less gentle than the artwork suggests. The persistent Total Multiplier is easily the strongest part, because getting useful values early gives the entire bonus somewhere to go.
The 45,000x headline number is slightly cheeky since it depends on an extremely rare four-Super-Scatter trigger rather than the regular mechanics building naturally toward it. Still, cascades, Mystery symbols and 500x multipliers keep the base game from feeling completely empty, and the bonus has a nice sense of progression once the Total Multiplier starts moving.
