Who knew the middle of outer space would be filled with cherries, watermelons, and golden bells? That’s exactly what you’ll find in Supernova Shooting Stars, a surprisingly traditional release from Hacksaw Gaming. The game takes a classic fruit machine setup and drops it into a colorful cosmic environment filled with glowing planets and shooting stars. Everything looks reasonably polished, but the overall presentation is much simpler than what we’ve come to expect from the studio. In fact, it almost feels like something a completely different developer might have created.
The gameplay is equally straightforward. Star and Epic Star symbols do most of the heavy lifting, spreading across the reels and potentially transforming regular Wilds into multipliers worth up to 250x. There are also two free spins bonuses where at least one special Star symbol is guaranteed on every spin. The maximum payout reaches 5,000x the bet, so there’s certainly some potential hidden among the stars. Still, Supernova Shooting Stars doesn’t bring much originality to the table, sticking to a relatively simple formula with just a handful of familiar features.
Supernova Shooting Stars features 5 reels and 3 rows with 9 fixed paylines. Wins require at least three matching symbols on consecutive reels from left to right. Alongside the standard playing card ranks, you’ll find cherries, grapes, watermelons, and golden bells. Wilds substitute for regular paying symbols, and they’re also responsible for creating most of the game’s larger winning combinations.
The highest available RTP is 96.26%, although several lower configurations are also available. Volatility is medium, while the hit frequency sits at 49.74%, meaning some kind of win occurs on almost every second spin on average. Bets range from €0.10 to €200, with a maximum payout of 5,000x the stake. Regular symbol combinations don’t pay particularly impressive amounts, though, so landing the more valuable prizes generally requires some help from the spreading Stars and their multipliers.
Supernova Shooting Stars keeps most of its gameplay centered around a single mechanic. Special Star symbols spread across the reels, transform regular Wilds into multipliers, and play an important role in both free spins features.
Alongside the regular Wild, there are two special Star symbols that also act as Wilds.
However, Stars don’t automatically expand every time they land. The expansion only happens when the Star itself, or a symbol it would transform, contributes to a winning combination.
Whenever a Star or Epic Star expands over a regular Wild, that Wild transforms into a special multiplier symbol.
The possible multiplier values are:
2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 6x, 7x, 8x, 9x, 10x, 25x, 50x, 100x, and 250x.
These multipliers apply to winning combinations that include the affected symbol. If multiple multiplier Wilds contribute to the same win, their values are added together before being applied.
The first bonus is triggered by landing 3 FS Bonus symbols anywhere on the reels.
Rain of Light awards 8 free spins, with at least one Star or Epic Star symbol guaranteed to land on every spin. The regular expansion rules still apply, meaning the Star must be involved in a potential winning combination before it spreads. However, having a guaranteed Star on every spin creates considerably more opportunities to activate the mechanic.
Additional free spins can also be awarded:
Rain of Light is the simpler of the two bonus features, although the right combinations of Wilds and multipliers can still produce some decent payouts.
Landing 4 FS Bonus symbols triggers the more powerful bonus, which awards 10 free spins.
This time, at least one Epic Star is guaranteed on every spin. Since Epic Stars can expand across an entire reel, there are more opportunities to create larger Wild combinations and potentially valuable multipliers.
Just like Rain of Light, landing two or three FS Bonus symbols during the feature awards additional spins.
Supernova Shooting Stars includes three special bet modes and two direct bonus purchases:
FS Bonus symbols cannot appear during Astral or Starlight FeatureSpins, meaning free spins cannot be triggered while either mode is active.
Supernova Shooting Stars is a rather unusual release from Hacksaw Gaming, and not necessarily for all the right reasons. We’re used to seeing creative themes and interesting mechanics from the studio, but this time we’ve basically been given a traditional fruit machine floating through space. The visuals are decent enough, although they lack the personality that makes so many Hacksaw releases memorable. The base game is also extremely simple, with the spreading Stars providing just about the only real excitement between regular spins.
To its credit, the Wild multiplier mechanic can work surprisingly well. Watching an Epic Star spread across several Wilds and create a valuable combination is definitely satisfying. Free spins make these moments more common, but there isn’t much else happening during the bonuses either. On the positive side, medium volatility and a hit frequency of almost 50% make this a relatively approachable game for players who prefer simpler slots. Overall, Supernova Shooting Stars isn’t a bad release, but Hacksaw Gaming has so many more entertaining games in its catalog that this one struggles to stand out.
