Slot review: Carnival Joker

Carnival Joker takes Slotmill under the big top with striped tents, glowing carnival lights, fruit symbols and a grinning joker running the show. It is bright, cheerful and very traditional, mixing old-school sevens and cherries with the sort of colorful fairground setting that needs almost no explanation.

Underneath the costume, things are even more familiar. Carnival Joker is the second game in Slotmill’s Legends series and follows Raging Riches very closely, right down to the expanding Free Spins and coin-based Hold & Win bonus. It all works perfectly well, but anyone who played the first game may get déjà vu before the joker has even finished introducing himself.

Carnival Joker uses 5 reels arranged in a 4-5-5-5-4 layout with 2,000 Bet Ways, which can grow to 5,488 ways during Free Spins. The standard RTP is 96.08%, with a 94.11% version also available, volatility is high, and the maximum win reaches 5,533x the bet. Stakes run from 0.20 to 100.

The base game is pretty simple, with most of the action sitting behind two separate bonuses. Bonus symbols unlock Free Spins with expanding middle reels and Multiplier Wilds, while 6 or more Coins trigger Fortune Frenzy, where Sticky Coins build toward fixed prizes and a 5,000x Grand. An optional Xtra-Bet can also make both bonuses easier to hit.

Landing 3, 4 or 5 Bonus symbols gives 8, 10 or 12 Free Spins. During the bonus, Wilds on reels 2–4 carry random 2x or 3x multipliers, while UP symbols increase the height of the reel they land on by one row. Each middle reel can grow twice, eventually taking the grid from 2,000 to 5,488 Bet Ways. Fully expanding a reel also gives 2 extra Free Spins.

The bonus can also be extended by landing more Bonus symbols, with 2–5 of them awarding 3–6 extra spins. It is a simple progression system, but watching the middle of the grid slowly stretch upward is easily the more interesting half of Carnival Joker.

Fortune Frenzy

Landing 6 or more Coins triggers Fortune Frenzy with 3 respins. Every new Coin stays locked in place and resets the counter back to 3. Regular Coins are worth 0.5x–10x, while the fixed prizes are Mini 20x, Minor 50x and Major 250x.

Fill all 25 positions and the game adds a 5,000x Grand on top of all the Coin values already sitting on the grid. There are no fancy collectors or transformations here – just a very traditional Hold & Win where the main excitement comes from watching those last empty spaces refuse to cooperate.

Xtra-Bet

Carnival Joker skips the usual bonus-buy menu and instead offers Xtra-Bet. Turning it on increases the stake by 50% and doubles the chance of triggering both Free Spins and Fortune Frenzy.

It is a straightforward option and probably suits this game better than a massive buy menu anyway. The bonuses are the main reason to be here, so seeing them a bit more often makes sense.

Our verdict: Carnival Joker

Carnival Joker is polished, easy to understand and perfectly pleasant to play. The Free Spins have a nice little sense of progression as the reels grow, and Fortune Frenzy does exactly what a classic Hold & Win is supposed to do.

The problem is that almost everything here feels borrowed from somewhere else – especially Raging Riches. Even the carnival and joker theme plays things very safe, so there is not much that really sticks in the memory once the show is over.

Nothing is particularly wrong with Carnival Joker, and players who like uncomplicated bonuses should get along with it just fine. We just wish Slotmill had slipped one genuinely new trick up the joker’s sleeve.
