Grizzly Stampede takes ELK Studios back to the cursed hunting grounds of Rex Stampede, only 66 million years later and with a considerably furrier apex predator running the place. Mountains, forests, glowing totems and one seriously angry grizzly set the scene, while wolves, eagles, cougars and moose mostly look like they would rather not be around when the bear starts moving.

The theme is more straightforward than ELK’s usual weirdness, but the game has a nice flow once the mechanics wake up. Stampedes turn whole stretches of a row into Grizzlies, the Totem can throw extra Stampede symbols onto the grid and multiplier Wilds add a bit more bite. Free Spins then turn the whole bear-collecting idea into a proper progression system where the reels expand and weaker animals slowly get pushed out of the food chain.

Landing 2 Stampede symbols on the same row triggers either Stampede or Super Stampede. The regular version converts both Stampede symbols and every position between them into the top-paying Grizzly symbol, while Super Stampede throws additional Grizzlies onto random positions as well. It is a simple idea, but watching a whole stretch of mediocre symbols suddenly turn into bears is easily one of the better moments in the base game.

A Stampede symbol that fails to find a partner is not completely wasted. Its energy charges the Totem, which can randomly wake up on a later spin, empty itself and add fresh Stampede symbols to the reels. The Wild also substitutes for regular paying symbols and can reveal a 2x, 3x or 5x multiplier when it contributes to a win. If several multiplier Wilds join the same combination, their values are multiplied together, so a couple of useful Wilds can make quite a difference.

Bonus and Super Bonus

Landing 3, 4 or 5 Bonus symbols awards 6, 9 or 12 Free Spins. During the feature, each reel gets its own token meter, and golden Grizzly symbols feed tokens into the meter for the reel where they land. Filling a meter on reels 1, 2, 4 or 5 gives 1 extra spin, expands that reel from 4 to 6 rows and permanently converts one of the premium animal symbols into Grizzlies for the rest of the bonus.

The middle reel takes a little more work. Collecting 5 tokens on reel 3 gives another extra spin, expands the reel and upgrades every regular Grizzly into the stronger Raging Grizzly. New Bonus symbols can also add more spins: 2, 3, 4 or 5 Scatters give 3, 6, 9 or 12 extra spins. If a Super Bonus symbol appears on reel 5 during the original trigger, the Super Bonus starts instead and hands out extra tokens before the first spin even begins.

This progression is where Grizzly Stampede gets properly interesting. Early spins can look pretty ordinary, but opening more rows and gradually replacing the other animals with Grizzlies gives the round a clear direction instead of just handing you a pile of Free Spins and hoping something happens.

Our verdict: Grizzly Stampede

Grizzly Stampede is not ELK Studios at its weirdest, and the wild-animal theme could easily have come from plenty of other providers. The presentation is polished and the angry-bear setting works, but it does not have quite the same instant personality as ELK’s stranger releases.

Where the game wins us over is the progression. Turning stretches of the grid into Grizzlies is satisfying in the base game, while the bonus gives you something clear to build toward as reels expand and more of the weaker animals disappear. The 50,000x max win also gives all that bear conversion plenty of room to matter when things really line up.

It can take a while for the machinery to get moving, and a weak bonus can feel like a lot of setup for very little payoff. Still, once the Stampedes start connecting and the grid begins filling with Grizzlies, this is a very solid ELK release with enough bite to keep us around.
