Lucky Drums 88 takes Pragmatic Play back to a very familiar corner of its catalogue: red lanterns, golden dragons, lucky coins and enough shiny gold to make the whole temple glow. Two huge drums sit above the grid, one silver and one gold, and pretty much everything interesting eventually finds its way into one of them.
The theme is hardly fresh, and Pragmatic Play has been down this road plenty of times before. The coin system does give the game a bit more going on than the usual Hold & Spin, though. Silver and Gold Coins can trigger bonuses, stack themselves into the drums or return to the grid with cash prizes, jackpots or multipliers. It is familiar territory, just with a few extra moving parts rattling around inside the drums.
Lucky Drums 88 is played on a 5×5 grid using Scatter Pays, with at least 7 matching symbols needed for a win. Winning symbols disappear through the Tumble mechanic and new ones drop into their places. The highest RTP is 96.53%, with 95.56% and 94.57% versions also available. Volatility is high, the hit frequency is 27.17%, and the maximum win reaches 20,000x the bet. Stakes range from 0.20 to 240.
The real focus is on the Silver and Gold Coins and the two drums above the reels. A coin can start Hold & Spin, get stored in its matching drum for later, or return to the grid with a cash value, jackpot or Tumble multiplier. Both drums can eventually trigger together, opening two separate 5×3 Hold & Spin grids at the same time.
Every Silver or Gold Coin that lands flies toward its matching drum and then one of several things can happen. It may trigger Hold & Spin immediately, get stored in the drum for a future bonus, or return to the main grid with a 0.5x–20x cash prize, a fixed jackpot or a 2x–10x Tumble multiplier. The jackpots are Mini 10x, Minor 25x, Major 100x and Grand 1,000x. A coin can also simply disappear without paying anything, because apparently even magical lucky drums need the occasional disappointing outcome.
Each drum can store up to 8 Coins, and those collected coins are dropped onto the corresponding bonus grid when Hold & Spin eventually starts. This is probably the nicest twist in the base game, because a full-looking drum actually gives you something to look forward to instead of every spin starting completely from scratch.
When a drum activates, Hold & Spin plays on a 5×3 grid with 3 respins. Any new Coin resets the counter back to 3, while cash-value Coins stay locked in place. If both the Gold and Silver drums activate, you get 2 separate 5×3 grids running alongside each other. There is no stronger color here either; Gold and Silver can carry the same values.
Before the respins begin, up to 8 Coins already stored in the active drum are added to the grid. Multiplier Coins can boost the values sitting alongside them, and filling all 15 positions on a grid awards an extra 1,000x Grand Jackpot on top of the collected prizes. The two-grid version is easily the more interesting outcome, but underneath everything this is still a pretty traditional Hold & Spin setup.
The Special Bet menu gives you three ways to make Coins appear more reliably, plus one direct route into the bonus.
The Ante Bets suit the game pretty well because Coins are basically the whole point anyway. The 200x bonus buy feels a lot steeper, especially when the reward waiting on the other side is still a fairly standard Hold & Spin.
Lucky Drums 88 looks polished and the drum system gives the base game more to watch than a plain coin collector usually manages. We especially like that Coins can build toward a future bonus instead of every one simply paying or disappearing on the spot.
The problem is that once the drums finally open, the main event feels very familiar. Hold & Spin has been done to death, and even the possibility of running two grids at once does not completely shake that feeling. The Chinese luck theme is also about as well travelled as it gets.
There is enough here to keep fans of simple coin-collection games happy, and the 20,000x ceiling is certainly not shy. We just expected the drums to make a little more noise.
