Monster Quest is a Big Time Gaming slot that sends a knight into a fantasy world full of monsters, castles, gems and one very angry dragon. The game uses the Megaways system, so the reel height changes on every spin and the number of ways to win can shift all the way up to 117,649.

The main idea is more interesting than the theme first suggests. Instead of simply collecting every monster value on the screen, the Knight can only defeat monsters with a value equal to or lower than his own. Each successful fight makes him stronger, which can turn the bonus features into a small “level up before the boss fight” moment.

That is a good idea, but the whole game does not quite land as well as it could. The fantasy theme is very standard, the presentation is not especially memorable, and the slot can feel frustrating when big monster values appear but the Knight is still too weak to touch them. Brave hero, yes. Overqualified dragon slayer, not always.

Monster Quest is played on 6 Megaways reels, with each reel showing between 2 and 7 symbols on every spin. At full size, the game offers up to 117,649 ways to win. Wins are formed from left to right by landing at least 3 matching symbols on adjacent reels, starting from reel 1.

The default RTP is 96.49%, with lower RTP versions also available. Volatility is high, and the maximum win is 99,900x the bet. The available stake range can vary depending on the casino version, which is fairly common with Big Time Gaming releases.

The lower paying symbols are card ranks, while the higher paying symbols are coloured gems. The main gameplay is built around the Knight, monster values, Dragon targets, Megaways wins and a feature system that can feel clever, but also quite punishing.

Slot features: Monster Quest

Wilds: Wilds substitute for regular paying symbols and help create winning combinations. They do not replace Scatter symbols or Bonus symbols.
Bonus symbols: Bonus symbols can show the Knight, different Monsters or the Dragon. These symbols are linked to the Hold and Spin feature and the game’s main collection mechanic.
Knight and Monsters: The Knight can defeat Monsters only when their value is equal to or lower than his own value. When he defeats a Monster, that Monster value is added to the Knight’s total. This is the key rule behind both main bonus features.
Hold & Spin: Landing 6 or more Bonus symbols triggers the Hold & Spin feature. The Knight starts with 3 lives, and the grid can land new Monsters or blank positions. If the Knight defeats a Monster, the Monster value is added to his total and one life is restored, up to a maximum of 3 lives. If no Monster is defeated, one life is lost. The feature ends when the Knight loses all lives, the grid fills with Monsters or the Dragon is defeated. At the end, the Knight’s final value is paid.
Free Spins: Landing 3 or more Scatters triggers Free Spins. The feature starts with 12 free spins, plus 2 extra spins for each Scatter above 3. The Knight stays active during the full bonus and begins with a random value between 8x and 15x the bet. During the round, the Knight can defeat Monsters with equal or lower values, and each defeated Monster increases the Knight’s value. If 5 or more Monsters appear during Free Spins, the game can launch the Hold & Spin feature inside the bonus round. The Knight can still collect Monster values there, but those defeated Monsters do not increase the separate Megaways Win Multiplier.
Win Multiplier: Regular symbol wins in Free Spins use a Megaways Win Multiplier. The multiplier starts at x1 and increases by +1 for every Monster defeated during the feature. This multiplier applies to regular symbol wins only.
Retriggers: Landing 3 or more Scatters during Free Spins awards 4 extra free spins, plus 2 more extra spins for each additional Scatter.

Our verdict: Monster Quest

Monster Quest has a clever core idea, but the full package feels uneven. The Knight mechanic gives Hold & Spin more personality than a basic cash collect bonus, and the 99,900x max win is a huge number on paper.

The problem is that the game can be more frustrating than fun. Big Monster values often sit there looking tasty, but the Knight may be too weak to collect them. The fantasy theme also feels very safe, and the visuals do not do much to lift the mood.

Overall, Monster Quest is playable and has one interesting mechanic, but it is not one of Big Time Gaming’s stronger releases. The Knight has a big quest ahead of him, maybe a bit too big.
