Toad Town takes Backseat Gaming into a Wild West town where someone has apparently forgotten one fairly important detail: towns are usually built on dry land. Here, wooden saloons, wanted posters and old storefronts sit among swamp water, lily pads and reeds, while a gang of frogs seems perfectly happy with the arrangement.

It is a fun little setting, and probably the most original part of the game. Underneath all the mud and cowboy hats, Toad Town has a much more familiar feel, especially if you have played multiplier-heavy titles like Duel at Dawn. Full-reel wilds, competing multipliers and the occasional huge number popping onto the screen are very much the main event. Backseat Gaming has not reinvented the shootout here, but swapping dusty streets for a frog-filled swamp gives the whole thing enough personality to avoid feeling completely recycled.

Toad Town keeps the basic win system surprisingly traditional. Despite the chunky 5×5 grid, there are only 15 fixed paylines, so regular wins are still easy enough to follow even when several wild reels start stretching across the screen.

The base game mostly feels like the waiting room for the bigger features. Regular wilds help with line wins, but the real attention goes to the VS and X symbols. They are the ones capable of turning an ordinary spin into something much more interesting, and without them the swamp can stay pretty quiet for a while.

Symbols and features

The regular wild substitutes for paying symbols, but the VS symbol is where things properly start moving. It can land on any reel and expands to cover the whole thing as a wild reel. Two multipliers are then revealed, with one randomly selected and attached to that reel. The possible values start at 2x and climb all the way to 200x.

That little two-number reveal gives the feature some personality. Seeing 150x sitting next to 3x before the game makes its choice is exactly the sort of mildly cruel drama these multiplier slots live for.

The X symbol joins in when there is already at least one VS wild reel on the grid. Landing 3 Bonus symbols triggers Toad Trouble with 10 free spins. The mechanics stay mostly the same as in the base game, but VS and X symbols appear more frequently. It is the simpler bonus of the two: basically the normal game with a much better chance of seeing the symbols you were waiting for in the first place.

Our verdict: Toad Town

Toad Town has a funny theme and a feature setup that can definitely produce some entertaining moments, even if the mechanics themselves feel familiar. The swampy Western setting works surprisingly well, and frogs running a cowboy town is stupid enough to be memorable without the game trying too hard to make a joke out of everything.

The VS and X reels are the main attraction. There is something satisfying about watching a decent multiplier take over an entire reel and then hoping an X symbol arrives to send it somewhere ridiculous. The downside is that the base game can spend a fair bit of time waiting for exactly that to happen.

The Swamp Showdown is what pushes Toad Town up a notch. The progression ladder gives the bonus a proper direction, and the increasingly strong guaranteed spins make reaching another level feel worthwhile. It is not the freshest multiplier slot around, and anyone familiar with games like Duel at Dawn will recognize plenty of the DNA, but Backseat Gaming has put enough of its own muddy personality around the formula to make the trip into Toad Town worthwhile.
